MEET YGN LEADERS

1. Please introduce yourself

My name is Daniel Minseok Kim. I am currently a 4th year Medical Sciences student at Dalhousie University. I’ve been involved with AKCSE since last year, and currently serving as the president.

2. What are the factors that made you stay in/commit to AKCSE?

I decided to commit to AKCSE after the CKC Ottawa in 2016. It was the first time I met any other AKCSE members and execs from other chapters. Being the Atlantic chapter, it is really hard to communicate or interact with any other chapters but attending CKC broadened my view and convinced me that there are a lot more I can learn from being part of the group.

3. What do you think are strengths of your AKCSE school chapter?

I think the strengths of my AKCSE YG chapter is its close interaction with Atlantic YP chapter. We have the YP Atlantic chapter who are very supporting in carrying out chapter events, and it is a blessing to have professionals who are willing to sacrifice their time to help out the school chapter events. We are able to carry out events like Interview Workshop and Program seminars to local students and parents with the help from the YP Atlantic chapter.

4. What is a goal you hope to achieve during your presidency?

My goal of the presidency is to provide the other executive members with as much experience as possible in planning and hosting events, so they can have a motivation to carry out the event. If the organizers don’t enjoy planning the event, the likelihood of that event going well is very slim. I want my team to have fun while doing their work.

5. If you were given opportunity to be the president one more year, would you do it again?

No, although it was a rewarding experience, I would also like to see others take the role and learn and grow from it. If they need help, I will be ready to help them out in any way possible, but I think one year was enough for me.

6. What is the most memorable event you hosted in your group, and why?

I think the Genius is the most memorable event hosted by my chapter. It is taken from the TV show The Genius. We have a talented game master and people who are willing to provide their time to make that possible, and it was such a fun event that lasted over the whole winter term last year. It involved a lot of work and commitment, and it was the first long-term event hosted by AKCSE Atlantic chapter, so it is the most memorable event.

2017-18 AKCSE Atlantic Chapter President

2017-18 YGN External Executive

I would like to tell [the first year students] to join and try out as much societies and events as possible. It is the best time to explore beyond the academic level to see what you enjoy the most, and if you find something commit to it. There is no harm in trying and it could develop your character in a way that no classroom teachings can.
