MEET YGN LEADERS

Tim Song

Project Engineer at BOMBARDIER

Aviation & Aerospace

My interest in aviation started in Grade 4 on my first plane ride that my family took to immigrate to Canada. My field of interest will be in the aviation/aerospace industry including commercial, business aviation as well as interesting military and space programs. My dream job would to become a leader that is responsible for a new clean-sheet aircraft development program.

1. Please introduce yourself

I am a Project Engineer for the Global 7000 Flight Test Team at Bombardier Aerospace. Born in Korea, raised in Oakville Ontario. Have an undergraduate Aerospace Engineering degree from Carleton University in Ottawa Ontario. I am a licensed Professional Engineer. Been a plane geek since childhood and managed to make it a career.

2. During undergraduate studies, did you participate in any extracurricular activities relating to your current career?

I was a member of the Carleton Mechanical and Aerospace Society and Carleton Student Engineering Society by default. I did attend their seminars and career panel sessions from time to time. I also helped out with the Moon Buggy team for a short period.

During my fourth year, I was part of the group that founded Ottawa Korean Young Engineers and Scientists (OKYES) which turned out to be precursor to AKCSE’s YG/YP groups.

3. What was the best part of your undergraduate life?

I am grateful for the many aspects of my undergraduate life. If I had to choose the best, it would be the opportunity for me to learn and understand the technical theories, laws, formulas, concepts behind the aircraft – as well as the opportunity to gain a practical experience through its coop program.

I am also mostly grateful for the great group of friends that I had in helping each other in group work and studying together for exams.

4. What motivates you to pursue your career?

New challenges, knowledge and experience in aircraft and aviation motivates me to continue pursuing my career. There is always something new to learn and problem solve and the sense of accomplishment as well as pride in the product is always a plus.

5. What do you consider to be the most important when deciding your career? i.e, salary, prestige, etc.

I believe sustained passion and continuous fulfillment is the most important aspect to consider when deciding on a career path. However, it is also important to consider other aspects such as salary and prestige that would fit your lifestyle and comfort.

6. Any tips for a job interview?

It’s important to be able to sell yourself to the potential employer. Impressing the interviewer is important, but it is also important for you to find out if the job is actually what you’re interested in.

7. What does success mean to you?

Success is a state when the results or outcomes exceed the assumed expectations.
